Word Tubajon originated from the plant locally known as “Tuba-Tuba”. Tuba-tuba fruit was formerly used by the local fishermen to poison fish aside from its herbal usages. Most of the fishermen used “tuba-tuba” fruit to have a good catch. The phrase “Tubajon an Isda” had been often times used by marginal fishermen every time they will meet fishermen from other places to have a good catch. Until finally, the consensus of the people living in the area became and known to be Tubajon and later became barrio Tubajon one of the barrio of Loreto. Thru the effort of former Vice Mayor of Loreto, Hon. Jacinto Pinat with his partner former Rep. Constantino Navarro, Tubajon was separated and became one of the Municipality of Dinagat Islands by virtue of Republic Act No. 5643 enacted on June 21, 1969, at the time of former President Ferdinand Marcos. The town became a part of the province of Dinagat Islands in December 2006, when the province was created from Surigao del Norte by Republic Act No. 9355. However, in February 2010, the Supreme Court ruled that the law was unconstitutional, as the necessary requirements for provincial land area and population were not met. The town reverted to Surigao del Norte. On October 24, 2012, however, the Supreme Court reversed its ruling, and upheld the constitutionality of RA 9355 and the creation of Dinagat Islands as a province.
